San Francisco 49ers' Last Super Bowl Appearance

The San Francisco 49ers last appeared in the Super Bowl on February 11, 2024, during Super Bowl LVIII. In a highly anticipated rematch against the Kansas City Chiefs, the 49ers were narrowly defeated with a final score of 31-20. This game marked the 49ers' eighth Super Bowl appearance, with their previous participation resulting in a loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV.

Under the leadership of head coach Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers concluded the 2023 regular season with a 12–5 record, securing the NFC's No.1 seed and a first-round bye. Quarterback Brock Purdy, in his first full season as the starter, was named to the Pro Bowl, throwing for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, finishing with a league-leading passer rating of 113.0. The offense was bolstered by first-team All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey, who led the league in scrimmage yards (2,023) and total touchdowns (21). The receiving corps featured Brandon Aiyuk, George Kittle, and Deebo Samuel, each surpassing 1,000 scrimmage yards, making the 49ers the first team in NFL history to have four players with over 1,000 scrimmage yards in a single season.

Defensively, the 49ers excelled by finishing third in the league in scoring defense, allowing only 17.5 points per game, and leading the league with 22 interceptions. Pro Bowl defensive end Nick Bosa led the team with 10.5 sacks, while first-team All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner contributed 132 combined tackles, four interceptions, four forced fumbles, and 2.5 sacks. The secondary was anchored by second-team All-Pro cornerbacks Charvarius Ward and Deommodore Lenoir, who combined for eight interceptions and over 150 tackles.

Despite their strong performance throughout the season, the 49ers fell short in the Super Bowl, extending their championship drought since their last title in 1994. The team remains determined to build upon their successes and aims to return to the Super Bowl in the near future.
